What Is Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction involves removing a tooth that’s too damaged or unhealthy to save with alternative treatments, such as root canal therapy. At our office, Dr. Brett Titensor and Dr. Jackson Mann are conservative dentists. This means he looks to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible, and will only recommend a tooth extraction when he truly believes it’s the only option for restoring your oral health.

There are two types of tooth extractions, known as simple extractions and surgical extractions. Simple extractions can be done on teeth that are fully erupted from your gums. This treatment involves wiggling the tooth loose and pulling it out of your mouth.

Surgical extractions are a little bit more complicated. They are necessary for teeth that are broken near the gumline, or for teeth (such as wisdom teeth) that have not fully erupted from the gums. In this procedure, Drs. Brett and Jackson will make an incision in your gums, then cut the tooth into pieces and extract each piece through this incision.

The benefits of tooth extractions

  • Restore your overall oral health
  • Eliminate painful, unhealthy teeth
  • Prevent further infection and other complications
  • Protect your other teeth, especially when removing unhealthy wisdom teeth
  • Prepare for the placement of a new tooth, like a dental implant

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Not sure when you may need a tooth to be pulled? Here’s a quick overview of the most common situations when tooth extractions are necessary:

  • Severe tooth decay or damage – This is the most common reason for tooth extractions. If a tooth is severely damaged by tooth decay, infection, gum disease, or even an accident that breaks the tooth, it may need to be extracted.
  • Unhealthy wisdom teeth – The wisdom teeth are a natural part of the mouth. But if they do not emerge properly, they can cause issues like pain, a high risk of oral infections, damage to the nearby teeth, and more. If your wisdom teeth are unhealthy, extracting them is the best way to preserve your oral health.
  • Orthodontic purposes – Tooth extractions are also sometimes needed for patients with severe orthodontic issues, like crowded teeth and a narrow palate. Extracting one or two teeth can free up space for the other teeth to be moved into healthier positions.
  • Preparing for other procedures – Tooth extractions are also sometimes needed to prepare for certain dental procedures. For example, if you want a full set of dentures, all of your remaining teeth will need to be extracted to ensure that they fit properly.

How The Tooth Extraction Process Works

Tooth extractions usually take about an hour, but you can expect to spend a total of around two hours at Titensor Dental. Not sure what will happen during your procedure? Here’s a quick guide to the basics.

Initial consultation

First, our dentist will examine your mouth and take X-rays to check on the health of your tooth. He will determine whether or not it’s possible to save your tooth with an alternative treatment like a root canal or a crown, or if a tooth extraction is necessary.

Once you’re approved for a tooth extraction, you will typically come back to have your tooth pulled at a separate appointment. However, we also offer same-day tooth extractions in Flower Mound, TX in some cases.

Exploring your sedation options

At Titensor Dental, we offer sedation for tooth extractions in Flower Mound. Our sedation options include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and even deep IV sedation.

With dental sedation, you can feel less anxious, more comfortable, and get tooth extractions without stress. If you’re not sure which type of sedation is right for you, we recommend discussing your sedation options with your dentist during your first visit.

Preparation and numbing

Dr. Brett and Dr. Jackson will begin your tooth extraction by cleaning the surgical area and numbing your mouth. Our team will also administer sedation to keep you feeling comfortable. Depending on the type you choose, this may involve breathing laughing gas through a nose mask, taking some pills before your procedure, or getting sedative medicine through an IV drip.

Simple tooth extraction

This is the most common type of extraction. In a simple extraction, the doctors will use a tool called a “dental elevator” to wiggle your tooth loose in the socket. Then, once he loosens it enough, he will pull it out with a dental forceps. Then, he will clean up the treatment area and stitch the socket shut.

Surgical tooth extraction

Surgical extractions are used for impacted wisdom teeth or for teeth that are too damaged to be removed with a simple extraction. In this procedure, the doctor will create an opening in your gums near the tooth. Then, he will access the tooth through this opening, cut it into small pieces, and remove the tooth pieces one by one. Then, he will clean up and suture the incision in your gums to ensure your mouth heals properly.

Finishing up and recovery

We will send you home with a full set of recovery instructions to follow. You will need to take things easy for a day or two, eat soft foods, and follow all of the other directions he provides to you. You may also need to schedule a follow-up visit with our team so that Drs. Brett and Jackson can check on your recovery progress.

Preparing For Tooth Extraction Surgery

It’s a good idea to stock up on soft and liquid foods so that you have plenty of nutritious meals to eat while you recover. Other than that, you don’t need to do anything special to prepare unless you are being sedated.

If you are getting sedation from Dr. Brett or Dr. Jackson, they will provide you with specific instructions. For example, you may need to discontinue certain medications for a day or two, or avoid eating and drinking (fast) for at least eight hours before your surgery.

You will also need to bring a responsible adult with you to Titensor Dental unless you are getting nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation. This is because you cannot drive yourself home if you are getting oral conscious or IV sedation.

Our Tips For Post-Extraction Care and Recovery

Our doctors will give you a full set of instructions to follow during the tooth extraction recovery process. But if you’re wondering what to expect, here are a few post-extraction care tips and precautions you’ll need to follow after your surgery:

  • Eat soft foods – You will need to eat liquid and very soft foods like yogurt and milkshakes for a few days. As your mouth heals, you can add firmer foods back into your diet, and you can typically eat normally after about two weeks.

  • Avoid straws and spitting forcefully – Especially for the first 48-72 hours, using a straw or spitting can dislodge the blood clot that forms in your tooth socket. This may cause “dry socket,” a painful complication that interferes with healing.
  • Don’t smoke, vape, or use other tobacco/nicotine products – Smoking and vaping can also cause dry socket. And in general, using other tobacco or nicotine products like nicotine pouches or chewing tobacco will interfere with the healing process. It’s best to avoid these products for at least a week after your extraction. Ideally you should stop using tobacco and nicotine altogether.
  • Take care when brushing near the extraction site – You should avoid brushing or rinsing the extraction site for 24 hours. Then, you can use salt water to rinse your extraction site. After three days, you can start brushing the extraction site very gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Follow all of the instructions – Our team will send you home with a full set of recovery instructions. Following them closely will speed up the recovery process and minimize your recovery time, so do your best to stick to these instructions throughout the process!

Tooth Extraction Costs & Financing

Simple tooth extractions are typically much cheaper than surgical extractions. On average, you’ll pay between $200 and $400 per tooth for a simple extraction. Surgical extractions are more complex. This makes them more expensive, with typical treatment costs ranging from $250 to $700 per tooth.

Sedation may also add more costs to your tooth extraction. Nitrous oxide typically costs between $50 and $100, oral conscious sedation costs $400 to $500, and IV sedation costs between $500 and $1000.

The good news is that dental insurance will typically cover part of the cost of medically necessary tooth extractions. At Titensor Dental, we are not in network with any insurance companies, but we are happy to file out-of-network claims on your behalf to help you make the most of your insurance benefits.

At Titensor Dental, we believe that finances should never get in the way of your oral health. That’s why we also offer financing plans to split the cost of care into low monthly payments. Just ask our team about your options during your consultation!
