Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral Conscious Sedation at Titensor Dental

At Titensor Dental, we help lessen dental fear and phobia by offering sedation dentistry. The type of dental sedation recommended depends on the level of your dental anxiety. For mild fears, Dr. Titensor might suggest laughing gas (nitrous oxide). If your fear prevents you from seeking necessary dental care, IV sedation may be the best option. However, if you experience apprehension but can still attend your appointments, oral conscious sedation might be the ideal solution.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

Oral conscious sedation is the second most recommended dental sedation technique in the United States, right behind laughing gas. It’s a simple and effective method that requires no needles. Best of all, the medication creates such a relaxed state that you likely won’t remember much, if anything, about your visit. Although it feels like you’re sleeping through your treatment, oral conscious sedation allows for a level of awareness to ensure your safety and cooperation.

How Does Oral Conscious Sedation Work?

If Dr. Titensor determines that oral conscious sedation is right for you, he will prescribe a small pill for you to take an hour before your dental appointment. Because the medication induces relaxation and drowsiness, you must arrange for someone to drive you to our office.

Upon arrival, our friendly staff will ensure your comfort by covering you with a warm blanket and monitoring your vital signs. Once you are fully relaxed, Dr. Titensor and our dental team will proceed with your treatment in a pain-free and stress-free manner. After your procedure, your designated driver will take you home, where you can continue to rest.

How Long Do the Effects Last?

The effects of oral conscious sedation typically last for a couple of hours. However, as with any sedative, you should have someone stay with you for at least 24 hours to monitor your recovery and ensure your safety.

Are You a Candidate for Oral Conscious Sedation?

You may be a good candidate for oral conscious sedation if you:

  • Experience stress, fear, or anxiety about visiting the dentist
  • Have a fear of dental procedures
  • Require extensive dental work to be completed in one visit
  • Are resistant to numbing techniques
  • Gag easily during dental procedures
  • Have painful or sensitive teeth
  • Fear needles and drills

At Titensor Dental, we want to make your visit as comfortable as possible. If dental anxiety has kept you from getting the care you need, ask us about oral conscious sedation. Adjusting your comfort level is as easy as swallowing a small pill!
