Bone Grafting

Do I Need Dental Bone Grafting?

If you are considering dental implants, Dr. Titensor will need to assess whether your jaw bone can support your new, implanted tooth. If you have a decrease in the volume of your jaw bone due to gum disease, injury, or infection, Dr. Titensor needs to strengthen and build up the jaw bone, making it capable to support the implant. The dental bone grafting procedure is necessary or the implanted tooth may fail; therefore, again, it is important to determine if you need bone grafting before the actual dental implant.

What is Dental Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a technique used to increase the volume of the missing or eroded bone. In a dental implant procedure, your new tooth is set in your jaw. You must have the proper volume of supporting bone for successful dental implant. Bone grafting for dental implants, in simple words, is generating a jaw bone that helps to support the implanted tooth. Most times, Dr. Titensor uses the allograft bone, or freeze-dried bone, grafting technique, as the source for his dental bone grafting procedure.

Allograft bone grafting is one of three possible techniques for dental bone grafting. Its source is a freeze-dried bone. The use of freeze-dried bone may sound peculiar, but this type of bone grafting is common. Bone banks provide the freeze-dried bones for dental bone grafting. The use of freeze-dried bone in the bone grafting procedure stimulates your body to form a natural bone at the site of the dental implant.

How long Before the Bone Grafting Procedure is Complete?

The bone grafting procedure is usually complete within six to nine months. After this time, the bone graft has healed, and Dr. Titensor can set the implants in your new, stronger jaw.

What is the Success Rate for Bone Grafts?

Bone graft procedures have a high success rate. Nevertheless, sometimes they do fail. If you bone graft procedure leaves less than desirable conditions for your implant, Dr. Titensor will remove it. Studies show that bone grafts are more likely to fail if you smoke. Dr. Titensor will need to reevaluate your options at this point.

If you have any other questions about bone grafts or the bone graft procedure necessary for your successful dental implants, simply ask Dr. Titensor or a team member. We understand how important it is for you understand the process completely, so you can make an informed decision about your treatment.
