From A Patient
Tooth way, way back. Dr. Titensor and his team had to replace an old crown as far back as you can go in my mouth. They did a great job in a reasonable amount of time and I experience almost no pain during the procedure and very little soreness afterward.
Gum reshaping, also known as gum contouring, is a dental procedure that cosmetically improves the general look of a person's teeth. Dr. Titensor recommends gum reshaping when he categorizes your smile as a "gummy" smile. To have a "gummy" smile, your gums usually will cover too much of your teeth, more often the front teeth, and this can leave the length of your teeth looking too short. You may not be as apt to smile as often if you are self-conscious about the way your teeth look. When Dr. Titensor determines gum reshaping can easily correct your "gummy" smile, be assured it is a quick and painless treatment. Titensor Dental can help give you a smile that makes you feel confident by gum reshaping.
What is the Gum Reshaping (Contouring) Technique?
Past gum reshaping techniques required the use of a scalpel to cut away excessive gum tissue; however, new advances in dental technology allow Dr. Titensor a less painful way to correct a "gummy" smile. He uses a laser to trim away any excessive gum overlying the teeth. The treatment is quick and often painless treatment, and by using a laser, Dr. Titensor can seal cut blood vessels during the procedure. He limits the amount of blood released due to the incision, which aids in your healing process.
Dr. Titensor treats the "gummy" smile area with a local an aesthetic before he begins the procedure. Once your gum line area is numb, he uses the laser device to trim away the excessive gum that covers your front teeth and reshapes your remaining gum.
Benefits and Risks of Gum Reshaping (Contouring)
Dr. Titensor recommends this treatment to eliminate a "gummy" smile that can improve your smile and self-confidence. However, as with most procedures that involve cutting into tissue and bone, you experience certain risks.
Healing time is quick and simple by the use of a laser.
Numbing with local pain blocking anesthetic eliminates pain.
Removing of gum tissue may not be enough; therefore, removing of bone, a simple procedure, may be necessary to improve the look of your teeth.
Healing may take longer if too much gum has been removed leading to swelling leading to further treatment.
Am I a Candidate for Gum Reshaping (Contouring)?
If you have a jagged gum line or your gums extend to hide a significant portion of your teeth, then you are excellent candidate for laser gum reshaping. Dr. Titensor will reshape the gum line to lengthen the teeth, reduce the amount of gum that shows when you smile, and produce a more symmetrical gum line.
